The PlayStation Portable (プレイステーション・ポータブル Pureisutēshon Pōrutaburu) is a handheld gaming console developed and released by Sony. The system was initially released in Japan and America in late 2004 and early 2005.[1][2][9] As of autumn of 2011, the system has sold over 71 million units across the world.[7]
The PlayStation Portable is not only able to connect to Sony's PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 systems but has Wi-Fi capabilities.[10] The console's overall design is similar to that of regular dual shock controllers of the PlayStation, but has a similar design to Nintendo's Game Boy Advance in basic appearance. However, unlike the Game Boy Advance, the PlayStation Portable offers both an analog stick to function alongside a directional button pad.
History[]
The console was under production no later than late 2002 as Sony first unveiled concept images of the system at 2002's Sony Corporate Strategy Meeting.[11] Further announcements regarding the system's technical appearance were unveiled when it was first shown off to the press.[3] The PlayStation Portable was first announced at Sony's press conference before E3 2003, in which the Sony said only minor specifications about the system.[12][13]
The PlayStation Portable launched in all major regions excluding the PAL region[3] in 2004 with its initial model and a special Value System.[14] The system was marked around $180 USD with the Value System version marked around $225 USD. The first day launch of the system totaled nearly 200,000 units, whereas the delayed PAL release of the system totaled around 185,000.
